Cibus has an immediate opening for a Group Leader - Greenhouse Operations and Controlled Environments to help us to revolutionize plant breeding.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a MA/MS degree in Horticulture, Plant/Crop Science, Agronomy, Biology, or related field and a minimum 12 years’ experience in a research, development or commercial production environment, or a BA/BS degree with a minimum of 15 years of experience.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operations of all controlled environment research and production facilities, including growth chambers and greenhouses.
  • Manage controlled environment facilities to enable multi-year trait evaluation and proof of concept trait phenotyping activities on materials derived from our proprietary gene-editing platform, by working collaboratively with Product Development science and production staff.
  • Lead a greenhouse operations staff of 6-10 direct and indirect reports and oversee the daily function of the research and production greenhouse facility, including operations, space planning, research project support, product development support, and supervision of greenhouse support staff.
  • Implement and oversee greenhouse supply inventory procurement strategy. Build relationships with local and non-local vendors to ensure supply inventory needs are maintained.
  • Implement and oversee seasonal space planning process for R&D and production teams to utilize controlled environments space allocations.
  • Manage a team on performing all duties associated with the culture of a high-quality crop and ensuring smooth operations of a greenhouse and growth chamber facility. These duties may include: planting, transplanting, watering, insect and disease control, seed processing, and establishing and monitoring plant growth environments.
  • Participate in the strategic planning, development and implementation of crop-specific breeding and trait development strategies as a subject matter expert in utilizing controlled environments to measure and qualify trait expression.
  • Spearhead required controlled environments expansion and growth in alignment with strategic corporate goals.
  • Liaise with research staff to ensure greenhouse activities accomplish required program goals.
  • Oversee the hiring and supervision of Product Development operations staff.
  • Oversee the improvement of greenhouse infrastructure or processes as needed.

Knowledge, experience, skills:

  • 10+ years’ experience managing a research greenhouse or production environment dedicated to row crop species.
  • Expert knowledge in running production cycles and/or research projects in artificial growing environments including growth chambers and greenhouses.
  • Experience with Conviron, Argus, BioChambers, and Microgrow greenhouse control systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Integrated Pest Management principles and practices, plant propagation and culture methods, and soil and growth media preparation is required.
  • Expertise with applying fertilizers and pesticides in controlled environments, greenhouse and growth chamber lighting and control systems, and field crop species is a plus.

  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis and experimental design principles.
  • Able to use judgment and make routine recommendations for resolving problems in moderately complex assignments.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office suite.
  • Manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • Able to follow, troubleshoot, and develop SOPs on complex procedures.
  • Excellent skill in change management and ability to lead a team during transitional periods to achieve objectives.
  • Coaching and supervisory responsibilities will include leading a multi-level org chart of direct and indirect reports.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work under greenhouse conditions, including: lifting, bending and tolerating high temperatures for brief periods is required.
  • Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to work in high temperature and humidity conditions periodically throughout the summer months.
