Trait Development Scientist – Product Development New

Location: San Diego, CA

Cibus US LLC, a leading Agricultural Biotechnology company in San Diego CA, has an immediate opening for a Trait Development Scientist supporting our product development pipeline. This position is responsible for facilitating the movement and evaluation of new traits developed by our research team using Cibus' proprietary technology (RTDS™).

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a M.Sc./Ph.D. degree in Plant Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, or related field and a minimum of 5-8 years (M.Sc.), or 2-5 years (Ph.D.) of experience working in a commercial research and development environment.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing a team on Trait development projects within the Product Development department.
  • Primary responsibilities include overseeing the transfer and movement of new traits in various crop species from the lab research environment to the greenhouse development environment.
  • Evaluation of new traits in a greenhouse and/or growth chamber environment by developing and carrying out trait efficacy testing experiments.
  • Perform all duties associated with the culture of a high quality crop. These duties may include: planting, transplanting, watering, insect and disease control, seed processing, and establishing and monitoring plant growth environments.
  • Develop and implement crop-specific breeding and trait introgression timelines and strategies.
  • Liaise with research staff on project timelines to accomplish required program goals.
  • Troubleshoot existing processes and protocols to improve breeding and trait development timelines.
  • Assist in managing the operational requirements of greenhouse and growth room facilities and equipment for effective and efficient functioning of all programs, including space planning and maintenance of the greenhouse supply inventory.
  • Participate in the hiring and supervision of project staff.
  • Direct the improvement of greenhouse infrastructure or processes as needed.
  • This position will have direct supervisory responsibilities of at least 1-2 associate or assistant level staff.

Knowledge, Experience, Skills:

  • Experience evaluating new traits as a part of an agricultural product development pipeline.
  • Experience with line conversion or trait introgression projects.
  • Knowledge and understanding of trait development timelines and breeding methods.
  • Familiarity with genotyping using PCR based marker tools.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Integrated Pest Management principles and practices, plant propagation and culture methods, and soil and growth media preparation is required.
  • Hands on experience with fertilizers and pesticides, greenhouse and growth chamber lighting and control systems, and field crop species is desired.
  • Previous project management experience a plus.
  • Previous hands on experience with both monocot and dicot species is desired. Previous experience working with Rice in an artificial or field growing environment is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work under greenhouse conditions, including: lifting, bending and tolerating high temperatures for brief periods is required.
  • Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to work in high temperature and humidity conditions periodically throughout the summer months.
  • Willing to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Willing to monitor plants and experiments during the weekend on a rotating schedule or as needed.

Description:

Cibus US LLC, a leading Agricultural Biotechnology company in San Diego CA, has an immediate opening for a temporary, full-time Intern position in the Product Development Group. This position will be involved in assisting with the development of new traits derived using Cibus’ patented RTDS™ technology platform, supporting day-to-day operations of the greenhouse and growth room facilities, as well as interacting with product development and greenhouse staff on breeding projects.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s) in Horticulture Science, Plant Biology, Plant Pathology, Plant Breeding or other relevant scientific discipline, and available for a 3-6 month contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine duties associated with the culture of a high quality crop. These duties include: planting, transplanting, thinning, irrigating, scouting for insects and diseases, pollinating, harvesting, drying, seed processing and packaging, data input, record keeping and machinery maintenance
  • Assist with daily tasks related to crop-specific breeding strategies
  • Participate in the improvement of greenhouse infrastructure or processes as needed
  • Collect relevant data in a greenhouse and growth chamber laboratory environment to support breeding projects

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

  • Previous greenhouse experience with crop-specific culture protocols or greenhouse/nursery operations
  • Working knowledge of greenhouse lighting, irrigation systems, fertilization, pest control, and greenhouse environmental control systems is required

Research Associate – Cell Biology New

The candidate is expected to work independently with minimal supervision.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple plant cell biology related tasks towards meeting project goals and milestones – tasks include, but are not limited to initiation and maintenance of plant cell culture lines, isolation and purification of plant protoplasts, transfection-based delivery of molecules to plant protoplasts and flow cytometry.

This position is responsible for carrying out research and development projects associated with the movement of plant material through the development pipeline.

The ideal candidate will have a B.Sc. degree in Plant Science, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field and a minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in a research greenhouse environment.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties associated with the culture of a high quality crop in a greenhouse setting. These duties may include: planting, transplanting, watering, insect and disease control, seed processing, cross-pollinating, and establishing and monitoring optimal plant growth environments.
  • Conduct crossing protocols and support new breeding population development activities.
  • Liaise with research staff on project timelines to accomplish required program goals.
  • Troubleshoot existing processes and protocols to improve plant quality and develop new protocols when needed.
