Trait Development Scientist – Product Development

Description:

Cibus US LLC, a leading Agricultural Biotechnology company in San Diego CA, has an immediate opening for a Trait Development Scientist supporting our product development pipeline. This position is responsible for facilitating the movement and evaluation of new traits developed by our research team using Cibus' proprietary technology (RTDS™).

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a M.Sc./Ph.D. degree in Plant Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, or related field and a minimum of 5-8 years (M.Sc.), or 2-5 years (Ph.D.) of experience working in a commercial research and development environment.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing a team on Trait development projects within the Product Development department.
  • Primary responsibilities include overseeing the transfer and movement of new traits in various crop species from the lab research environment to the greenhouse development environment.
  • Evaluation of new traits in a greenhouse and/or growth chamber environment by developing and carrying out trait efficacy testing experiments.
  • Perform all duties associated with the culture of a high quality crop. These duties may include: planting, transplanting, watering, insect and disease control, seed processing, and establishing and monitoring plant growth environments.
  • Develop and implement crop-specific breeding and trait introgression timelines and strategies.
  • Liaise with research staff on project timelines to accomplish required program goals.
  • Troubleshoot existing processes and protocols to improve breeding and trait development timelines.
  • Assist in managing the operational requirements of greenhouse and growth room facilities and equipment for effective and efficient functioning of all programs, including space planning and maintenance of the greenhouse supply inventory.
  • Participate in the hiring and supervision of project staff.
  • Direct the improvement of greenhouse infrastructure or processes as needed.
  • This position will have direct supervisory responsibilities of at least 1-2 associate or assistant level staff.

Knowledge, Experience, Skills:

  • Experience evaluating new traits as a part of an agricultural product development pipeline.
  • Experience with line conversion or trait introgression projects.
  • Knowledge and understanding of trait development timelines and breeding methods.
  • Familiarity with genotyping using PCR based marker tools.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Integrated Pest Management principles and practices, plant propagation and culture methods, and soil and growth media preparation is required.
  • Hands on experience with fertilizers and pesticides, greenhouse and growth chamber lighting and control systems, and field crop species is desired.
  • Previous project management experience a plus.
  • Previous hands on experience with both monocot and dicot species is desired. Previous experience working with Rice in an artificial or field growing environment is a plus.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational and motivational skills, accurate record keeping, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and experimental design principles.

  • Highly proficient in Excel and MS Office suite. MS Access or other database experience a plus.
  • Manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong foundation in following SOPs. Able to develop SOPs and perform troubleshooting on procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in routine to achieve objectives.
  • Coaching and supervisory responsibilities will include supervision of assistant and associate level staff.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work under greenhouse conditions, including: lifting, bending and tolerating high temperatures for brief periods is required.
  • Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to work in high temperature and humidity conditions periodically throughout the summer months.
  • Willing to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Willing to monitor plants and experiments during the weekend on a rotating schedule or as needed.
  • Willing to travel to secondary greenhouse location in San Diego County.

Description:

Cibus US LLC, a leading Agricultural Biotechnology company in San Diego CA, has an immediate opening for a Seeds and Traits Product Quality Manager supporting our Product development and Breeding pipeline. This is a multi-disciplinary position focused on ensuring that new seeds and trait products developed by our Product Development and Breeding team using Cibus' proprietary technology (RTDS™) maintain a high standard of product performance prior to handoff to commercialization.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum M.Sc. degree with equivalent years of experience in one of the agricultural sciences such as Plant Science, Plant Breeding/Genetics, Agronomy, or related. Prior industry experience including knowledge of seed and/or trait product development is required. Experience working in or closely with breeding programs is a plus.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage pre-commercial quality assessment of seeds and trait products across multiple crops.
  • Responsible for confirming phenotypic performance of finished RTDS derived trait products using greenhouse and/or field testing methods prior to commercialization handoff.
  • Implement and manage Quality Management System related to seeds and trait products. Identify and analyze opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Oversee pure seed increase protocols in collaboration with greenhouse and field production teams.
  • Work with molecular team to develop and validate marker screening strategies to monitor quality metrics for seeds and trait products.
  • Collect, organize, and report quality assurance data on seed and trait products in pre-commercial development pipeline.
  • Liaise with regulatory, breeding, and commercial staff on project timelines to ensure product handoff milestones are achieved.
  • Manage timelines associated with Pre-commercial development process.
  • Participate in product selection and planning related to downstream commercialization goals.
  • This position may have direct supervisory responsibilities of full time and/or contract employees.

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

Description:

Cibus US LLC is a leading Agricultural Biotechnology company in San Diego CA whose mission is to be a leader in the development of a sustainable global non-transgenic food supply. We have an immediate opening for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate (dependent on candidates experience level) who can help us to revolutionize plant breeding using our unique, patented RTDS™ gene editing technology. The successful candidate will have a B.S. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field with 0+ years of experience or an AA/HS diploma with 2+ years of experience (for Research Associate level) or a B.S. degree with 2-5 years of experience or an M.S. degree with 0-2 years of experience (for Senior Research Associate level).

The position will have a key role running, maintaining, and expanding an automated high-throughput molecular screening platform supporting Cibus' patented RTDS gene editing technology. The successful applicant will be expected to operate an automated liquid handling system for DNA extraction and genotyping and assist in all aspects of the screening workflow including developing robust molecular screening assays. Responsibilities will include sample preparation, reagent preparation, assay design and validation, conducting qPCR reactions and NGS library preparations, data analysis, tracking, and reporting, and training other team members. Depending on candidates experience level, supervision of a junior scientist may also be required. Requirements:

  • Prior experience with automated liquid handling systems (such as Hamilton Microlab STAR) is required; ability to program automation systems is desired

  • Excellent sample and data tracking skills and an ability to record experimental procedures in a clear, accurate manner
